The Carolina Buckthorn arrived in excellent shape, looking very healthy and well packed. The only issue is that it was tightly bound to a stake at multiple points, which apparently greatly weakened the stem. When I took off the stake, it bent all the way with to the ground, since it was heavy with berries. It's strength was more like a Gumby than a tree. I staked it up more loosely to give it a chance to toughen up with some movement and hope I'll be able to wean it off in a year. The same thing happened with an identical specimen I planted two years ago, and it still is leaning a long way over, though I am hopeful that in time it will grow straighter.
They arrived in great condition and still look great planted. Unlike European or Asian buckthorn I am not sure if the berries are edible, but the birds love them. Definitely attracts blue jays, robins and cardinals to your garden since they seem to love the berries.
